The Ottawa community is mourning the loss of a remarkable woman, Sue Fay Healy, who passed away peacefully on June 8th at the age of 67, surrounded by her loving family. A native of Dublin, Ireland, Sue was a celebrated Irish dance instructor, a passionate performer, and an inspiring leader whose influence extended beyond dance into the hearts of many. Her legacy as the founder and owner of The Sue Fay Healy School of Irish Dance—Ottawa’s premier Irish dance studio since 1989—will endure for generations.
Sue’s story is one of dedication, talent, and a lifelong commitment to sharing her Irish heritage through dance. From her early years in Dublin, where she traveled across Europe performing with a Celtic Dance Company and competing at the highest levels—including the World Championships—she exemplified excellence and passion. Her impressive achievements in Irish dance, including placements at major competitions like the All-Irelands and World Championships, laid the foundation for her remarkable career as a teacher and adjudicator.
For over 30 years, Sue dedicated herself to teaching Irish dance, earning her qualifications as a TCRG (Táinteoir Críche Rince Gaelacha) and ADCRG (All Ireland Dance Judge). Her expertise was recognized worldwide, and she traveled extensively across North America and Europe, judging at prestigious competitions, including the 2011 World Championships in Dublin. Her commitment to nurturing young dancers and promoting Irish culture made her a respected figure in the dance community.
Beyond her achievements on stage and in the judging arena, Sue was a pillar of her community. She co-chaired the 2006 Eastern Canadian Oireachtas in Ottawa and chaired the 2007 North American Championships—events that brought together thousands of dancers and families from around the world. Her leadership helped elevate Ottawa’s reputation as a hub of Irish dance excellence.
Sue’s personal life was as inspiring as her professional achievements. She was married to Fran, her lifelong love, for 45 years—a partnership rooted in love, strength, and adventure. Their unwavering devotion was evident in the way Fran cared for Sue during her illness over the past 18 months, never leaving her side with tenderness and strength. Together, they built a warm, nurturing home for their children—Andrew, Francis, and Jennifer—who remember her as a fierce, honest, and endlessly supportive mother.
Those who knew Sue describe her as a luminous presence—one who could light up a room with her wit, warmth, and authenticity. Whether she was making someone laugh, offering comfort, or speaking the truth with kindness, she did so from the heart. Her impact extended beyond her family and students; she gave generously to her community and embodied the spirit of Irish culture through her teaching, leadership, and dedication.
Her legacy is rooted in her passion for Irish dance, her unwavering love for her family, and her authentic kindness. She leaves behind not only a thriving dance studio but also a profound influence on everyone fortunate enough to know her. Her life exemplified strength, authenticity, and a deep love for life and culture.
As the community mourns her loss, they also celebrate the extraordinary life she led. Sue Fay Healy’s spirit will continue to inspire dancers, families, and friends for years to come, reminding us of the power of passion, dedication, and love. Her memory will forever be cherished in the hearts of those she touched through her art, her kindness, and her unwavering spirit.
